The approval is an important milestone for a project the City has been progressing for several years and will provide a safer and more accessible crossing point for pedestrians.

Preparatory works are scheduled to begin during the Week of Monday, 5 October 2026. Further information about construction, including work notices and any traffic impacts, will be provided before works commence.

As part of the approved crossing design, 30 rose bushes located around the existing zebra crossing will need to be removed prior to works commencing.

The roses were planted by the City in the early 2000s. The City has not identified any commemorative significance associated with the plantings and the roses are a common variety.

Recognising that they have been part of the Canning Road streetscape for many years, the City has explored opportunities for the roses to be rehomed rather than disposed of.

After consultation with the Melville family who supplied the roses to the City, a number of local community organisations were approached and one has expressed an interest in receiving the roses. The City will work with the organisation to facilitate their removal and rehoming where practicable. As with any mature plants being transplanted, their successful establishment in a new location cannot be guaranteed.

The City appreciates the community's interest in the Canning Road streetscape and looks forward to delivering this important pedestrian safety improvement.
