Attending the Interview

Bring along any supporting documents, if required.
Arrive 15 minutes early to read through the interview questions and prepare your responses.
The recruitment panel consists of at least two members. Interviews follow a set format to ensure equity and fairness to each applicant.
Interviews range from 30 minutes to 1 hour in duration depending on the role.

Further Assessment

After the interview, People Services may contact your referees to conduct a Reference Check
For some roles a medical and/or drug & alcohol screen maybe undertaken
For some senior or specialty roles further selection testing may be undertaken such as skills assessment tests, emotional intelligence tests and/or cognitive ability tests.
For some roles a police check and/or Working with Children Check will be required.
All successful candidates will need to provide 100 points of ID and proof of their working rights in Australia.

Outcome

The successful candidate will be verbally offered the position, on acceptance they are given a written Offer of Employment.
Once they accept, the other interviewed candidates will be advised by phone call and all other candidates will be advised by email.

Workshop Mechanic

About this Opportunity

The Workshop Mechanic is responsible for the day-to-day servicing, maintenance, and repair of the City’s fleet, plant, and equipment. This role ensures operational reliability, safety, and compliance by following preventative maintenance programs and manufacturer guidelines. The position may also support parts handling, job documentation, and basic inventory tasks as part of the workshop team.
Key Responsibilities but are not limited to:

Carry out servicing, repairs, and maintenance of the City’s fleet, plant, and equipment in line with workshop schedules.
Ensure road-registered vehicles are roadworthy and compliant with safety and legislative standards.
Perform on-site and workshop-based maintenance to maximise equipment availability.
Support preventative and predictive maintenance programs using the latest tools and diagnostic equipment.
Assist with parts identification, ordering, and basic inventory management.
Maintain a safe and clean work environment, following WHS procedures and reporting hazards or incidents promptly.
Ensure high-quality workmanship and contribute to overall workshop efficiency and performance.

About YouYou will bring:

Mechanical Trade Certificate or equivalent
‘HR’ class driver’s license
Basic First Aid Training (Desirable)
Excellent communication, time management, and problem-solving skills.
Commitment to workplace safety and a strong understanding of compliance standards in fleet operations.
Strong knowledge of fleet maintenance, diagnostics, and repair processes.

Selection Criteria

Relevant mechanical experience.
Maintenance and repairs of vehicles, plant, and equipment.
Maintain accurate written and computer records for services and/or repairs of the City's assets.
Responsible for maintaining a neat and tidy workplace which is safe for staff and those who enter the workshop area.
Responsible for ensuring work environment and work practices are safe for staff and report any accidents or incidents on appropriate forms.
Prior to commencing tasks, assess foreseeable hazards, report and ensure corrective action to eliminate or reduce risk of injury or damage to people, plant, and equipment.
Extensive light vehicle and truck servicing skills
Sound knowledge of safe operating procedures and maintenance of tools and equipment.
Sound knowledge of vehicle transmission, suspension, etc.
Sound knowledge of small plant such as mowers, whipper snippers, chainsaws, etc.
Auto-electrical, hydraulic and tyre fitting skills desired but not essential.
Works cooperatively and effectively with others to achieve common goals.
Participates in building a team though coaching, guidance, and support.
Well-developed verbal and written communication skills including ability to provide outstanding customer service.
Demonstrated knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety issues both in terms of personal responsibility, team and public.

Hours of Work
This is a permanent full-time position working Monday to Friday, 76 hours per fortnight. Flexible work arrangements are available, with the option of a 9-day fortnight.

About the BenefitsThis position offers a salary of $92,565.03 to $95,369.56 per annum, (depending on experience and skill level) plus superannuation. Other inclusions are free parking, annual increments, EBA salary increases, a generous superannuation co-contribution scheme, 22 days annual leave which attracts 17.5% loading, Medibank/HIF/HBF Corporate Membership, free access to online learning, discounted membership at City owned facilities. We have flexible work arrangements or the option for a rostered day off fortnightly or monthly.
