FOGO, short for Food Organics and Garden Organics, introduces a third bin for weekly collection of food scraps and garden organics, which will be transformed into valuable compost.

This proven system has already been successfully implemented in local governments across Perth over the past decade.

Mayor Margaret Thomas eagerly anticipates the positive impacts FOGO will bring stating, “Many of us already embrace FOGO principles, whether through composting or keeping backyard chickens. For the broader community, FOGO will revolutionise our recycling habits and bolster our recycling rates."

The State Government has mandated that all local governments in the Perth and Peel regions adopt FOGO by 2025. To aid this transition, the $20 million Better Bins Plus: Go FOGO program will facilitate the switch to the three-bin system.

Residential rollout is scheduled to commence in September 2024, spanning an eight-week period.

The rollout of FOGO is supported by the Government of Western Australia and the Waste Authority through the Better Bins program as well as the Better Bins Plus: GO FOGO Program.
