The site was reported to the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation on December 1, 2006. The site was reported because it has been used as a municipal landfill between 1975 and 1997. The landfill accepted domestic waste, liquid waste, grease, oil, industrial waste, building rubble and industrial sludge. Other accepted wastes reported include the disposal of scrap metal, lithium batteries and septic solutions.
After the closure of the landfill in 1997, the site was compacted to a density of at least 1 tonne/m3 and levelled. The site was capped with clay and toped with a ground cover to limit erosion.
Site investigations including groundwater and landfill gas have been carried out since 2010. The assessed risk to date is low while the site is left undisturbed. Investigations are reviewed by an independent contaminated sites auditor prior to submission of assessments to the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation.
The site is currently used as public open space which is supported by the contaminated sites auditor and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation. Restrictions on site use to the public include vehicle access and disturbance of vegetation or soil as it may impact the clean fill topping.
The City is continuing to monitor and assess the site risk for reporting purposes to the Auditor and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulations to determine management requirements.
