Move to Learn Program

  • Group of five children high fiving in a circle

The students are assessed, when they first come to SKAMP, to determine where their difficulties lie and from this an individual program is created which is designed to meet their specific needs. We use a movement-based program to assist students struggling with laterality and dominance issues which is done through a series of gross and fine motor skill activities and games using the Move to Learn program. The one-hour weekly sessions are conducted in a one-to-one situation to enable the students' issues to be addressed without distractions. We also incorporate the use of the trampoline to build up the student auditory sequential memory, levels of concentration, and confidence as well as their overall coordination. Provision of academic remediation for reading, spelling, maths, writing and handwriting is also available. Typically, our students have various forms of dyslexia, attentional issues, dysgraphia and dyscalculia.

We are a small not for profit organisation with no government funding and we keep our fees at a level that hopefully won't exclude any students who need extra support. We do some fundraising throughout the year, which our parent base is expected to support, to enable us to buy resources for the students. This fundraising usually involves buying or selling small numbers of raffle tickets and attending a couple of functions throughout the year such as our annual movie night which we hold at SKAMP.

We also offer sessions, for younger students once a week, which use the Move to Learn sequences. These sessions are run by the Move to Learn in WA practitioner, Winsome Richards. She also does a lot of work with retained primitive reflexes which have a big impact on students and their learning outcomes.

Our centre is staffed by 2 fully trained primary school teachers and operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays during school terms only and is located in Lesmurdie.
