NAIDOC Week 2026: 50 Years of Deadly

29 June 2026 10:13 AM

Fifty Years of Deadly marks a milestone. It’s a tribute to the people who built this movement. the Elders who stood firm, the organisers who made space, the artists who turned resistance into expression, and the communities who keep showing up, year after year.

The City of Kalamunda is proud to continue its support of NAIDOC Week, unveiling a meaningful and engaging 2026 program that celebrates this year’s theme, “50 Years of Deadly.”

This milestone theme recognises five decades of strength, resilience and cultural pride. It honours the Elders who stood firm, the organisers who created space, the artists who transformed resistance into powerful expression, and the communities who continue to show up year after year.

The City’s 2026 NAIDOC Week program will commence with a special opening event on Sunday 5 July 2026 at 2 pm at Maamba Reserve, Forrestfield. This event will set the tone for the week, bringing the community together to reflect on the journey of NAIDOC and celebrate the enduring strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Running from Sunday 5 July to Friday 10 July 2026, the program will offer a series of immersive experiences that showcase local Aboriginal culture. Attendees can enjoy opportunities for cultural connection through culinary exploration, storytelling and healing experiences that centre connection to Country.

The City is also proud to launch the NAIDOC Emerging Artist Exhibition “Kaardtij” with Wesley Jackson. “Kaardtij” is an exhibition centred on remembering — a return to cultural knowledge through memory and nostalgia. The exhibition runs from Saturday 4 July to Sunday 26 July 2026, with the opening event to be held on Friday 3 July 2026 at 2 pm at the Zig Zag Gallery, Kalamunda.

Aligned with the 2026 theme, the program recognises that NAIDOC has always been more than a week — it is a platform, a protest, a celebration and a powerful statement of survival. It is a time to look back on the marches, the languages, the art and the leadership that have shaped the movement, and to acknowledge that this progress has come from generations of people refusing to be silenced.

Residents and visitors are invited to join in commemorating this significant milestone and be part of a vibrant, inclusive program that honours our shared history while looking towards a strong and thriving future. NAIDOC Week events are free to attend, although registration may be required.

The full program is available online at www.kalamunda.wa.gov.au/naidoc.
