The City’s Restricted Burning Period is now in effect from 1 April to 31 May 2026.
Garden refuse burning without a permit
Residents can legally burn small garden refuse piles without a fire permit under Section 24F(3) of the Bush Fires Act 1954, provided the following conditions are met:
Only garden refuse is burned.
The pile does not exceed 1 cubic metre (1m x 1m x 1m).
Burning is only permitted between 6pm and 11pm and must be fully extinguished by midnight.
Fires must be completely extinguished using water and/or earth—leaving smouldering piles increases the risk of re-ignition.
A responsible person must be in attendance at all times until the fire is fully extinguished.
Adequate firebreaks or hazard reduction measures must be in place around the burn area.
No flammable material is allowed within 5 metres of the fire while it is burning.
Means of extinguishing the fire must be available at all times.
Prohibited burning conditions
Burning is NOT permitted under the following circumstances:
When a Total Fire Ban or Harvest & Vehicle Movement Ban is declared.
When the Fire Danger Rating is High or above.
When winds exceed 15km/h.
