The City of Kalamunda has welcomed Alcoa’s announcement that it will no longer proceed with exploratory drilling activities in the Perth Hills*.
Mayor Margaret Thomas said the decision represents a significant and positive outcome for the community and the protection of the region’s natural environment.
“Our position has always been clear - that activities of this nature are not compatible with the character, ecology or lifestyle of our City. We are pleased that this has been recognised.”
Mayor Thomas said the announcement brings reassurance to residents who have raised concerns about the proposal over recent months.
“For our residents, this decision provides clarity and reassurance. Our City is a place of deep environmental and community significance, and many people expressed strong concern about the potential impacts of exploratory drilling. This outcome reflects the strength of local sentiment and the importance of safeguarding the bushland, waterways and residential amenity that define our region.”
She also acknowledged the collaborative advocacy undertaken by neighbouring local governments and the strong, consistent voice of the community.
“This has been a complex issue, but our community, neighbouring local governments and elected members have been united in their view that the Perth Hills must be protected. We are incredibly proud of our residents, who have consistently and respectfully voiced their concerns. The collaboration between the City, the Shire of Mundaring, City of Armadale and neighbouring LGAs along with local advocacy groups has been strong throughout, demonstrating what can be achieved when we work together on matters of shared importance.”
The City of Kalamunda will continue to monitor developments and remain engaged with neighbouring councils and State representatives to ensure the long-term protection of the local environment.
More information will be shared as it becomes available.
