100 Years Young: Hartfield Park Recreation Centre Member John Bottomley Still Going Strong

26 October 2026 8:00 AM

Hartfield Park Recreation Centre recently hosted a morning tea to celebrate dedicated member John Bottomley's 100th birthday.

John has been a familiar face at Hartfield Park Recreation Centre for more than 25 years, attending the gym three days a week and proving that age is no barrier to maintaining an active lifestyle. Now aged 100, John regularly uses the rowing machine, chest press and spin bike, with the rowing machine and bike remaining his favourite ways to stay fit. In addition, John is a true gentleman, embodying the very meaning of community spirit, being very popular among fellow members and staff and valued member of our community.

His commitment to exercise began early. Introduced to fitness during gym classes at grammar school, John developed healthy habits that have stayed with him throughout his life.

Following four years of service in the Army, where he recalls the physical demands of military life keeping him in top condition, John later turned to tennis as his preferred form of regular exercise before becoming a dedicated member of his local gym.

John believes consistency is the key to staying active "It's best to have two or three days of exercise than none at all. It could even be something as simple as going for a daily walk," he said.

Mayor Margaret Thomas celebrated the significant milestone "John's remarkable achievement is an inspiration to our entire community. His lifelong commitment to staying active, pursuing his passions and maintaining strong social connections demonstrates the positive impact healthy living can have at every stage of life."

"We are proud to celebrate John's 100th birthday and his long-standing connection with HPRC. He reminds us that it's never too late to stay active and that every step, ride or row contributes to a healthier and happier life."

The City of Kalamunda is proud to celebrate John's extraordinary milestone and the example he continues to set for people of all ages.
