City of Kalamunda launches ‘Unlocking METRONET’s Potential’ to help ease Perth’s housing pressure by partnering across government

The City of Kalamunda has launched its High Wycombe South Prospectus: Unlocking METRONET’s Potential and commenced a targeted community engagement program to partner with residents, landowners and developers on the future of the High Wycombe South Residential Precinct.

The prospectus sets out a clear, investment-ready pathway to deliver new homes, infrastructure and public spaces around METRONET’s High Wycombe Station. It identifies enabling works for roads, drainage and public open space that would unlock approximately 3,000 homes in High Wycombe South and support a further 8,800 additional lots in Maida Vale, with an estimated $42.2 million in shared infrastructure needed to make development viable.

An independent economic impact analysis by ACIL Allen confirms that the project represents a strong return on investment for the State and community. The report estimates more than $1.4 billion added to Western Australia’s economy, over 1,000 jobs created each year including 550 directly on site, and an uplift of almost $750 million in household incomes.

The prospectus outlines how the precinct can leverage more than $2 billion in recent public investment, including the Forrestfield-Airport Link and the proposed Community and Aquatic Hub, to maximise social and economic returns for Perth’s eastern corridor.

The City is committed to working in partnership with residents, landowners and key stakeholders to shape the future of the precinct. A new Engage page has been launched to ensure that those with a direct stake in the area have transparent and up-to-date information. Cell group workshops will also be undertaken to ensure equal representation in the planning process and to gather coordinated input from landowners. An educational video has also been published.

Mayor Margaret Thomas said the precinct presents a rare chance to align housing delivery with infrastructure already in place while giving the community clarity and confidence.

“Considering the current housing crisis, this area ticks all the right boxes. Just as important, our engagement program is about giving residents and landowners real certainty about the future, from how infrastructure will be delivered, to how we will approach advocacy, and when key decisions will be made.

“High Wycombe South is a brilliant opportunity for Perth’s east. By unlocking new housing adjacent to METRONET’s High Wycombe Train Station, we can support local jobs, activate our station precinct and deliver the parks and places families need.”

The City will continue its engagement program through to the new year, working directly with landowners, developers and government agencies. The High Wycombe South Prospectus and related materials are available on the City’s Engage Kalamunda page.
