City Transitions to Restricted Burning Period.

The City’s Restricted Burning Period is now in effect from 1 October to 30 November 2025. Fire breaks and compliance with the Fire Hazard Reduction Notice comes into effect from 1 November 2025.

Garden refuse burning without a permit

Residents can legally burn small garden refuse piles without a fire permit under Section 24F(3) of the Bush Fires Act 1954, provided the following conditions are met:

• Only garden refuse is burned.
• The pile does not exceed 1 cubic metre (1m x 1m x 1m).
• Burning is only permitted between 6pm and 11pm and must be fully extinguished by midnight.
• Fires must be completely extinguished using water and/or earth—leaving smouldering piles increases the risk of re-ignition.
• A responsible person must be in attendance at all times until the fire is fully extinguished.
• Adequate firebreaks or hazard reduction measures must be in place around the burn area.
• No flammable material is allowed within 5 metres of the fire while it is burning.
• Means of extinguishing the fire must be available at all times.

Prohibited burning conditions

Burning is NOT permitted under the following circumstances:

• When a Total Fire Ban or Harvest & Vehicle Movement Ban is declared.
• When the Fire Danger Rating is High or above.
• When winds exceed 15km/h.
