City Celebrates New Babies with Annual Commemorative Planting Day
It’s back and greener than ever! The City of Kalamunda’s much-loved Commemorative Planting Day returns this July, inviting families to celebrate our newest little locals born between May 2024 and April 2025.
This annual tradition is a beautiful way for parents living in the City to mark their child’s arrival, while also helping to enhance our natural environment with native plants.
Mayor Margaret Thomas celebrates the City’s newest residents, stating “Seeing families come together each year to plant something that grows alongside their child is really special. It’s such a beautiful symbol of connection — to family, to nature, and to our community,” she said.
“There’s something memorable about planting alongside other families and knowing you are part of something lasting. Coming back later to visit your child’s plaque makes it more memorable”.
Families who register will be invited to a community planting day on Friday, 18 July 2025 at a local park or reserve. A commemorative plaque featuring all babies’ names will be installed at the site, and each family will receive a personalised certificate and a native plant to take home.
This year’s native plant options are:
- Casuarina ‘Cousin It’
- Eremophila altern x maculata ‘Wild Berry’
- Grevillea ‘Dorothy Gordon’
- Prostanthera incisa ‘TB Native Thyme’
Plants are allocated on a first come, first served basis, so families are encouraged to register early to avoid disappointment.
Registrations close at 5pm on Friday, 30 May 2025 and can be submitted online at engage.kalamunda.wa.gov.au/commemorative-planting-day-2025
