Compassionate Communities Expanded through Connector Upskilling Program

22 April 2025 1:19 PM

The City of Kalamunda is proud to be part of the enhanced Compassionate Connectors program, which will offer volunteers change to activated citizens valuable training to support individuals living with chronic or life-limiting change to life changing illnesses.

The program builds on the existing Compassionate Communities initiative delivered by South West Compassionate Communities Network (SWCCN). This project is a partnership between the SWCCN, Compassionate Communities Australia, Kalamunda Compassionate Communities, City of Kalamunda and the Perron Institute and is supported by $800,000 in Lotterywest funding over the next three years. This funding boost will enable the expansion of the Compassionate Community Connectors Program to Bunbury and Kalamunda.

In the coming months, the City will roll out Citizen Connector Training, aimed at identifying potential citizen connectors in our community and equipping them with the skills to assist those in need. This includes supporting carers, individuals with life-changing illnesses, and those who are grieving.

Mayor Margaret Thomas welcomed the program’s expansion, stating, "Chronic or terminal illness can be debilitating—not only for the individual but also for their families, friends, and support networks. It’s essential that we recognise the importance of support services to ensure that some of our most vulnerable community members receive compassionate care.”

"This program acknowledges the critical role community change to citizen connectors play and provides them with the training needed to offer greater support”.

The first workshop was successfully held on 16 April at Lesmurdie Baptist Church, with two additional sessions scheduled for 23 May and 24 May 2025.  Both workshops will be held at Lesmurdie Baptist Church, 1 Varley Street, Lesmurdie. These sessions are free to attend, but bookings are essential. Lunch is provided.
