City Steps Up Efforts to Combat PSHB Infestation

15 October 2024 10:24 AM

The City of Kalamunda is intensifying its efforts to prevent the spread of the polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB), following confirmed infestations in several areas. The pest was first detected in Turner Park and Marri Crescent, Lesmurdie, in August and September 2024, and most recently, a positive infestation was found earlier this month on Elizabeth Street in Kalamunda.

Under the PSHB National Eradication Program, led by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), the City has been advised of the necessary removal of infected trees, including a River Sheoak and a Black Locust, to reduce the spread and protect the local tree population.

Mayor Margaret Thomas expressed her concern about the infestations, stating, “Our trees are such an important part of the City of Kalamunda’s natural beauty and environmental health. We are committed to doing everything we can to manage this threat and protect our community. I encourage residents to stay informed and report any signs of PSHB.”

To help the community understand more about PSHB and how they can assist, the City is hosting a free community information session at Pickering Brook Sports Club, 35 Weston Road, Pickering Brook at 6:30pm on Wednesday 6 November 2024.

This one-hour session includes a 45-minute presentation covering the pest’s biology, life cycle, the types of trees at risk, signs of infestation, and how to report suspicious activity. A Q&A session will follow.

Residents are encouraged to register for the session via https://www.trybooking.com/CWFHK and remain vigilant. Early detection and swift action are key in protecting our trees.
