Kalamunda Library

The Shire of Kalamunda has installed a demonstration project as part of the Perth Solar City program at the Kalamunda Library. It features:

  • a 2.16 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system (solar panels)
  • Solatube Daylighting Systems, and
  • Energy efficient LED lights.

Each of these is described in more detail below.

Solar Photovoltaic System
The solar system is a 2.16 kilowatt grid connect solar photovoltaic (PV) system. It was installed on the roof of the Kalamunda Library in early 2011.

A display on an LCD screen in the Library foyer shows the amount of power currently being generated and how much has been generated since the installation of the PV system, as well as images of activities at the Library and energy saving tips.

Solatube High Performance Daylighting Systems

Solatube Daylighting Systems are an innovative form of natural lighting, that are efficient in capturing, transferring and diffusing sunlight from outside to indoors, with minimal heat transfer.

Installed in the Kalamunda Library in December 2011, they can be found in 3 locations:

  • 4 over the Circulation Desk (where people borrow and return books)
  • 2 in the Family Reading Centre and
  • 1 in a store room.

The Solatubes create a natural and pleasant environment for Library users, and means the lights may be turned off during daytime operating hours, which helps reduce carbon emissions.

Energy Efficient LED Lights
An energy audit and lighting efficiency review was undertaken at the Kalamunda Library in November 2011. Some of the existing lights were replaced with LED (Light Emitting Diode) equivalents in February 2012.

  • 4 x 400W Metal Halide High Bay lights were replaced with
  • 4 x 100W LED High Bay lights

The LEDs use ¼ of the energy of the original lights, and are estimated to save the Kalamunda Library over $2,200 per year in electricity costs.
