About the Project

13 June 2016:
The City of Kalamunda has closed Ledger Road Reserve in Gooseberry Hill from all public access pending further investigations of the site.
The City has been made aware, in recent weeks, of an increase of activity on the site – including digging in areas previously remediated.
The site will remain closed whilst an investigation is undertaken. The City to provide further updates as more information is available.

21 June 2016: Community Update
The City of Kalamunda is aware there has been some community concern in relation to the classification of the Ledger Road Reserve in Gooseberry Hill, and in particular to the presence of asbestos at the site. The City of Kalamunda restricted access earlier this month to review the current management of the Reserve.

28 July 2016: Community Meeting

The City of Kalamunda held a Community Meeting to provide residents with an opportunity to hear directly from its Consultant regarding progress on site to date. The meeting was well attended by 55 people.

24 August 2016: Community Update
Air monitoring has been conducted with seven stations monitored before the emu-pick and 12 stations monitored during the emu-pick. The results indicated the official outcome of 'no cause for concern' for respirable fibres (including asbestos) both before and during the site works...Observation and validation is ongoing [read full update & maps here...]

October 2016: Community Update
The City of Kalamunda has now received the “Preliminary Site Investigation” (PSI) report for the Ledger Road Reserve. The report was received in late October, and will now be provided to the Department of Environment Regulation (DER) and the Department of Health (DoH) for review. The City of Kalamunda is also reviewing the report. The advice has continued to support the assessment of the site as low risk. We would like to thank all of the community members who provided information into the history of the site. [read full update & maps here...]

July 2018: Over the winter months the City has been undertaking maintenance works within Ledger Road as a part of the Reserves maintenance. Works include an emu pick, distribution of gravel and bushfire mitigation, Works will conclude at the end of July 2018, with further mulching.

The mulch will allow the Friends Group to revegetation this area of the reserve. Once these works have been finalised the City will be undertaking a full emu pick of trails and tracks in the reserve. Permanent signage will be installed and the orange bunting will be removed from the reserve at the end of the month, allowing community members to once again utilise the reserve for walking.
