Transport Assistance

The person you care for might be eligible for free or low-cost transport and subsidised taxi fares. Carers can often accompany the person free or for a small fee.

Types of transport assistance

It can be hard for some people to get to medical appointments, work, the shops or social events. A range of free or subsidised transport options are available through:

  • Commonwealth government services, such as My Aged Care
  • state, territory or local government health or transport departments
  • local councils
  • not-for-profit community transport providers.

Free public transport and companion cards

Aged pensioners get subsidised travel on public transport and people with disability may receive unlimited free travel on public transport.

As a carer, you might be eligible to get a free companion card. The National Companion Card website has information on how to apply.  http://www.wacompanioncard.org.au/

Subsidised taxi services

Different taxi vouchers and subsidies are available across Australia for the elderly and for people with permanent or severe disability or in a wheelchair. The City of Kalamunda provides an 16 (+ Driver) seater Community Bus and fuel free of charge to local seniors groups and charitable organisations arranging outings for senior citizens. 

The bus seats 16 passengers and can hold 2 wheelchairs which will reduce the passenger numbers to 15.
