Shire of Kalamunda DISABILITY SUPPORT

The Shire of Kalamunda aims to support people with disabilities to live as part of the local community.

Liberty Swing
The Liberty Swing is an accessible swing for children who use a wheelchair.  The Shire of Kalamunda is delighted to have a Liberty Swing in Stirk Park, corner Kalamunda Road and Canning Road.  The playground is off Elizabeth Street.

    


A key is required to access the swing and enclosure.  Keys may be purchased or loaned from the Shire of Kalamunda at 2 Railway Road, Kalamunda or the Kalamunda Library, Williams Street, Kalamunda.

Companion/Carer Assistance
People with a disability, who are unable to attend community venues and activities without attendant care support, have a right to participate equally in the community.  When a person with a disability requires the assistance of a companion in order to attend a particular venue or activity, the companion will be included at no extra charge.

Disability Access and Inclusion Plan
The Shire of Kalamunda recognises that people with disabilities have the same rights and responsibilities as other community members to access services and facilities and to participate in community life.

Disability  Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee
The Committee comprises of community members with a disability, people working in  the disability field, elected members and relevant staff who work together to promote the wellbeing and sense of belonging of people with disabilities residing, working in or visiting Kalamunda.

You're Welcome Access Initiative
The Shire of Kalamunda has been successful in sourcing funding from Western Australian Local Government Association  to introduce the “You’re Welcome Initiative”.
The project aims to give people with a disability the same opportunities as others to access community life by:

  • Providing clear, easy to obtain access information about facilities and attractions, including hotels, restaurants, banks, chemists and churches.
  • Providing practical information, including customer service training, that will assist businesses and community groups to make their services accessible to customers of all ages and abilities.

This initiative will be implemented during 2009.

Disability Services
The Shire of Kalamunda aims to help people with disabilities maintain their independence, and offers opportunities to enjoy local events and have access to services within the Shire.

Peter Anderton Respite Centre
A dedicated programme that aims to provide unparalleled service provision for young people with a disability operates from the Peter Anderton Respite Centre which is the adult day centre in Forrestfield.  The service focuses on providing clients with a challenging and fun time, maintaining social contact and engaging the community.  Groups meet weekly on a Wednesday and also Friday evening.
