Kalamunda and the Perth Hills are seen as the premium destination for WA trail users, particularly mountain bikers who are seeking places to ride in increasing numbers. Mountain biking is one of the world’s fastest growing recreation, sport and tourism activities, the rapid rise in mountain biking now provides Kalamunda and the Perth Hills with a unique opportunity to grow and evolve into a world class mountain bike destination.
In 2012, the City of Kalamunda, in partnership with the Shire of Mundaring and the Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPAW), developed the Perth Hills Trails Master Plan (2013) to guide future trails provision across the Perth Hills over the next 15-20 years. A key aspect of the Master Plan was the improvement of the link between Kalamunda, Bickley and Pickering Brook areas for both walkers and cyclists. The concept design of the Trail Loop that achieves this, and importantly creates a link between Kalamunda Town Centre and the Mundaring Railway Reserve Heritage Trail.
