Community Service
Students at Forrestfield Primary School raised $325 to help rescue two endangered sun bears from Cambodia and enable them to start a new life at Perth Zoo.

School-based Local Drug Action Group students at Forrestfield, Kalamunda and Lesmurdie Senior High schools raise drug awareness amongst their peers and the community.

St Brigid’s students participate in a program assisting residents at Villa Maria Hostel.

A Wattle Grove Cub Scout became the first West Australian to receive a Grey Wolf Award. The award is the highest achievement a cub scout can be given in Australia.



Sport
A 10yr old Walliston Primary Student won eight medals at the State Rhythmic Championships at Challenge Stadium.

Forrestfield Senior High School student is heading to Southampton in England where he will play with some of the best soccer players his age.

17 year old Lesmurdie young person won a gold medal in the individual shot put for athletes with disabilities. At the Pacific School Games in Melbourne.

Wattle Grove young person played for the WA squad in the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League 18 Years Championship. He was also awarded Most Valuable Player for WA.

High Wycombe Junior boxer won the state boxing title in the 80kg division. He also took part in a national martial arts competition and finished second in Chinese kickboxing.

The Perth Angels Cheerleading Squad, a Kalamunda based team, were the overall champions of the Downunder Spirit Championships in Queensland.

The Junior Pennant Team Golf team from Hartfield Country Club won the Metropolitan A Grade Division Pennant Final.

A Lesmurdie young person received an award for Young Volunteer For The Year at the Tennis West awards presentation.

A Falls Road Primary School athlete brought home a silver medal as part of the WA relay team at the pacific School Games.

Lesmurdie Senior High School won the SunSmart Secondary school cricket competition boys’ grand final at the Super 8’s Carnival.

High Wycombe teenager came third in Junior Open Division at National Karate Championships.

Three young Kalamunda kick boxers were part of the 2006 Australian Team, with two of the fighters returning with medals, at the World Muay Thai Federation World Amateurs in Bangkok.



Arts

Six students from Forrestfield and Kalamunda Senior High School had their art and design work selected to feature in the Young Originals Exhibition 2006 at Central TAFE.

A Maida Vale teenager wowed Australian audiences during Australian Idol 2006.

St. Brigids College Select Choir won the WA State finals of the ABC Classic FM Choir of the year.

Art students at Kalamunda Senior High School awarded the Best School Award at the Armadale Art Awards.

Lesmurdie Senior High School won the Perth grand final of the Rock Eisteddfod 2006.

Two young people from Lesmurdie and Maida Vale were selected as finalists in the Student division for the WA Fashion Design Awards, which is part of the Perth fashion Festival.



Academic
The following Shire of Kalamunda trade apprentices were WA representatives at the WorldSkils Championship in Melbourne – Cabinetmaking (Forrestfield); Carpentry (Forrestfield); Pastry baking (Gooseberry Hill) and Welding (Lesmurdie).

A Lesmurdie apprentice heavy vehicle mechanic won a gold medal at the national WorldSkills Competition in Melbourne.

Two Lesmurdie Senior High School students were equal third in a Nationwide ancient history competition hosted by Latrobe University.

A Mazenod College student was crowned second best Australian geography student at the 2005 National Geographic Channel Australian Geography Competition Final.

A Lesmurdie Senior High School was awarded second place in the national 2004 United Nations High Commission for Refugees high school writing competition.

Two Lesmurdie Senior High School students were finalists in a statewide essay writing competition run by the Department of Health, Scitech, the WA Institute for Medical Research, Edith Cowan University and Biotechnology Australia, on the ethical issues associated with the study of human genetics.

A Carmel Adventist student received first place in the upper secondary category of the Mary Durack Award for Young Writers.
