Smoke, Dust & Sand

Smoke
The Shire of Kalamunda prides itself on its environment, but unfortunately wood fires and the burning of garden waste sometimes produces excessive smoke which can cause discomfort to neighbours and contributes to the pollution haze over Perth.

Residents may burn green waste in their yard when the fire ban is lifted (usually between April and November) but need to be mindful of the legislative requirements and ensure they are not creating a nuisance. Please refer to our Guidelines on Minimising Smoke for more information.

Dust & Sand

Dust and sand drift can cause a problem for neighbouring properties, particularly from cleared land in dry windy weather. Property owners have a responsibility to prevent excessive dust and sand drift from their land. There are a number of ways to minimise drift including:

  • Provide sprinklers or a reticulation system on site to wet down all problem areas.
  • Cover all piles of sand or other building materials.
  • Use of wind fencing (eg: Hessian or shade cloth) to decrease wind strength.
  • Mulch the problem areas; this is more effective than watering as it is not affected by evaporation.

Please contact us for more information.
If you are having ongoing problems with dust or sand drift please complete and return a Health Investigation Request Form.
