Environment and Sustainability

The Shire of Kalamunda is in a unique position in relation to the natural environment, encompassing the Swan Coastal Plain, the Darling Scarp and the Jarrah Forrest (also referred to as the Darling Plateau).  In recognising this unique environment, the Shire has been an advocate for conservation by using the District Conservation Strategy, the Conservation Atlas and the Wildlife Corridors Strategy as guiding documents, developing new tools such as the Biodiversity Strategy, providing support to the 51 Friends Groups within the Shire, providing funds each year to preserve the natural environment on Shire owned land and providing 15,000 free plants to residents and community groups each year.

The Shire also takes a strong position on sustainability issues both within the organisation itself and also out into the wider community. This is shown by the commitment towards such programs as the Water Campaign™ and Cities for Climate Protection which encourage sustainability actions from within the Council as well as promoting an environmental ethic within the community.
