Keeping of Animals

The Shire of Kalamunda prides itself on maintaining a village atmosphere, and this includes allowing the keeping of animals such as, poultry, sheep and other large animals. However, in order to ensure that neighbouring properties are not unduly affected by noise, odour or other potential problems, guidelines and local laws have been developed.

If you are having a problem with animals being kept on a neighbouring property, please first discuss it with your neighbour. If the problem persists please complete and return a Health Investigation Request Form.

Poultry
The Shire of Kalamunda allows residents to keep up to 20 poultry (including chickens, ducks, pigeons etc) on a property providing that the required distances from neighbouring homes and roads can be maintained, and the birds are kept in a suitable enclosure. Refer to the Guidelines for Keeping of Poultry Sheet for further information and details.

It is the responsibility of the owner to ensure the enclosure is regularly cleaned to avoid attracting pests such as rodents and flies. The Shire discourages residents from keeping roosters as they can cause a significant noise problem for neighbours.

Large Animals
A large animal includes a horse, cow, pig, sheep, goat, camel, deer, alpaca and llama. If you wish to keep any of these animals on your property you must submit an application for planning approval. Once approval has been given the animals must be kept so as to minimise the potential for impacts on neighbours. See Guidelines for Keeping Large Animals for details.

Bees
