Walk the Zig Zag - 5th October 2008

The annual Spring walk down Zig Zag Scenic Drive, Gooseberry Hill is happening again on Sunday the 5th of October. It is sure to be a delight for the whole family with Story Teller, Glenn Swift telling the story of the Super Heroes, SCALLYWAGS running around creating mischief, musicians, roving performers, art, culture – all on this three kilometre downhill walk through Spring wildflowers, low vegetation dotted with the spiky Zanthorrea with views of Perth and beyond. It is by far one of the most picturesque events to take place in the Shire of Kalamunda.

From 8:30 on Sunday morning walkers are transported from two park-and-ride locations to the top of the Zig Zag. As walkers spill onto the Zig Zag they are greeted by entertainment, a passport for their journey, a free bottle of water and sunscreen. From here the surprising journey begins.

Event Coordinator Marilyn Keys said, “'Every year it is a real challenge to come up with an interesting and engaging theme, so this year I am thrilled that we have come up with the colourful action packed story of the Super Heroes!”

Our Super Heroes battle the villians and prevent a cataclysmic fire on the Zig Zag. All our Local Superheroes, have their own talents and special abilities and have contributed in a meaningful way to their community, to Australia and abroad. Our four Super Heroes consist of  Priya Cooper, a paralympian who attended St Brigid's College, Dave Way ,the recently retired director and founder of the internationally acclaimed Kalamunda Youth Swing Band, EVH Keane engineered and constructed the Zig Zag rail and Emma Wallis  the unofficial local midwife and nurse in the region at the turn of the 20th century.”

The walk will be a fun packed stroll with excitement at every bend. At the first bend camel rides, flora and fauna walks and talks, entertainment and a variety of kids activities await walkers. The first of the Customs Posts manned by a community group ready to stamp passports with an image of the first of the 'Super Heroes' can be found here too.

On the way to bend number 2 walkers are entertained along the way by balladeers and story tellers who will be sharing the epic story of our 'Super Heroes'. At bend 2 walkers will be greeted by Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and some of the local animals who are in their care. Bibbulmun Track Foundation in their 10 anniversary year are always on hand for walkers to dream about the day they tackle the track (or at least a small section of it!).  The Customs Post will deliver the next of the Super Hero stamps onto the passport and some good country music will accompany you onto the next leg of the journey.

The walk between bend 2 and 3 opens onto the vista of the whole metro area and walkers are often seen just gazing out across the horizon taking in the spectacular view. More entertainment to carry walkers on the longest stretch of the walk. At bend 3, by far the largest, walkers will find circus activities, the Life Be In It Van, displays, fire engines and even more entertainment and the next instalment in the exciting epic of the Super Heroes.

Finally the last stretch will bring the aromas of bend 4 where food, music and a leisurely rest welcomes everyone. The last part of the Super Hero story will unfold here and happy walkers will be able to make their way to the end of the walk where buses will take them back to the park-and ride-locations. Nina Rose, face painter  and balloon artiste extraordinaire will be there to greet all the happy walkers keeping the fun going all the way to the bus. Transport from park-and-rides at Stirk Park, Kalamunda Road, Kalamunda as well as from Maida Vale Reserve, corner of Old Midland Road and Ridgehill Road, Maida Vale.
