The Shire of Kalamunda is issuing a warning to Off-Road vehicle owners to ride and drive their vehicles in approved locations or be prepared to pay the consequence. The hard line on off road vehicles follows continued issues throughout the Shire’s many parks, reserves and public open space.
Director of Community Development Kevin O’Connor said, “Off-Road vehicle users and parents of children who use off-road vehicles have a responsibility to ensure that vehicles are used in a way that is safe and legal for the user, the wider community, and the environment. Numerous complaints have been received from residents about the illegal use of off road vehicles causing a nuisance and environmental damage.”
“The Shire of Kalamunda has been working very closely with the Department of Environment and Conservation, the WA Police Department and the Water Corp to educate off road vehicle users about the basic legal and safety requirements for vehicle use on land managed by these agencies.”
In the Shire of Kalamunda Off-Road vehicles can only be used on private land with the permission of the land owner. There is no public land in the Shire of Kalamunda where off-road use is permitted. Penalties, ranging from $500 - $1,000 will apply if found driving or riding in a non-permitted area.
Off-Road vehicles include all trail bikes, go-karts, 2 or 4 wheel motorbikes and 4 wheel drives. There are a number of public areas where off-road vehicle use is permitted, including Chidlow, Gnangara, Ledge Point, Lancelin and York. These sites are set aside for certain classes of Off-Road vehicles. Details relating to the location of the sites can be obtained from the relevant local Council or the Department of Environment and Conservation.
