Rail Link Concept Supported

A committee recommendation supporting a new rail link that would service the Shire of Kalamunda was carried unanimously at a Planning Services Committee meeting on Monday night. It was advised that Council strongly recommends the concept of the construction of a suburban rail service that utilises the medians of Tonkin and Roe Highways to link Kalamunda via the future Perth International / Domestic Airport to Bayswater and the Perth CBD and authorises staff to discuss the concept with Commonwealth, State and Local Government Authorities.

The recommendation follows the recent announcement that the Western Australian Airports Commission is intending to consolidate the Perth Domestic Airport with the International Airport and link the new combined terminals to Perth CBD via a new rail link to Bayswater along the Tonkin Highway.

The Shire of Kalamunda is located to the east of the airport and is currently relatively poorly served by public transport facilities and does not link well into the Midland or Armadale train lines.

The concept design would provide the City of Belmont with possibly two opportunities for stations. The Shire of Kalamunda could have three stations in Forrestfield, near Sultana Road and near the Kalamunda Road / Roe Highway intersection. The City of Swan could have a station along Adelaide Street.
