New Media for Hills Community Groups
The Shire of Kalamunda have recently produced and released a range of informative environmental publications targeted at and tailored to the local hills community.
The Friends Group Manual serves as a comprehensive resource containing everything from how to go about initiating and forming a group, to the practicing of work-safe techniques in the bush environment, the sorts of activities that friends groups can tackle through to the tabling of a comprehensive list of resources and contacts that can be accessed by anybody seeking more specific local environmental information. The Friends Group Manual received high praise from the President of the Shire of Kalamunda and should be an essential tool in the shed of every hard-working local community group active in caring for the natural areas contained in our community
The brochure Making Weed Control a Priority details the top ten problem weeds as identified in the Shire of Kalamunda’s Weed Control Strategy and aims to inform and educate the local residents about the inherent risk posed to local biodiversity if these weeds are allowed the spread unhindered. The brochure describes the growth habit of each species, includes pictures for easy identification and specifically details the best practice method of control for each particular weed.
The Dieback Working Group have recently updated the booklet Managing Phytophthora Dieback in Bushland: A Guide for Landholders and Community Conservation Groups. The 2008 edition is an excellent weapon in the fight to mitigate the negative impacts caused to our local environment as a result of Phytophthora Dieback spreading from one location to another. This publication gives a comprehensive overview of what Phytophthora Dieback is and the pathogens method of dispersal, ways that you can aid in the protection of your bushland and a basic set of guidelines that should be strictly adhered to when undertaking activities in our local natural areas so as to halt the spread of Phytophthora Dieback.
All three publications are readily available to local residents from the Shire of Kalamunda through the Environmental Reserves Officer, who can be contacted on 9257 9806 although it is preferred that you contact the Dieback Working Group on 0438 044 488 to obtain a copy of their booklet.
