Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre has negotiated a license agreement with the Shire of Kalamunda and the Department of Environment and Conservation to relocate to ‘Paxwold’, a former Girl Guide Camp site in Lesmurdie. A Lotterywest community grant of $1.5 million will help Kanyana achieve this by relocating the animal enclosures and hospital, to establish its operations at the 16 hectare property.
Animal admissions at Kanyana have increased from 70 in 1986 to over 1800 in 2008, and to satisfy the communities demand for Kanyana’s services, Paxwold will provide a larger, state of the art wildlife centre and hospital to meet future needs.
The concept for Kanyana at Paxwold is to create a breeding and education facility accessible to those who require help with wildlife problems, and to attract the attention of interstate and international visitors.
The facility at Paxwold will comprise the following; a hospital unit, separate enclosures for various animals, reception and administration, equipment storage wing, and a food preparation area. Paxwold will also offer space for an education centre to further teach the public and increase an appreciation of wildlife.
Paxwold will offer Kanyana volunteer’s better conditions to care for the animals and to expand if need be. Volunteers are an indispensible part of the work at Kanyana and their tasks include nursing and feeding sick and injured birds and animals, cleaning and maintenance, administration and public education. Volunteering a regular part of your week at Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre is one of the most personally rewarding things you can do.
With the generous support of local businesses and its volunteers, Kanyana stands out as a highly effective organisation providing care and rehabilitation for wildlife, and educating the public and the environmental community.
It is essential that Kanyana set itself up, as soon as possible, to operate in the manner that will be sustainable after the move to Paxwold Centre. If you are interested in volunteering your time or would like to make a donation please contact us.
