Sunday October 25 really showcased what the Kalamunda Town Centre really has to offer.
Kalamunda was a mecca of activity with the 25th Anniversary Zig Zag Festival at Stirk Park, Seniors Week Rotary Concert at Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre and an Antique and Collector Fairs at the Agricultural Hall. Combine this with the Kalamunda Farmers Market in the Central Mall and an event at the Northern Terminus of the Bibbulmun Track and the town centre was pulsing.
Shire President Donald McKechnie said “It was fantastic to see our vibrant town centre featuring such a hub of activity. I had the pleasure of attending the Rotary Seniors Week Concert at the Kalamunda Performing Arts Theatre during the day, and then attended the Zig Zag Festival and watched the Zig Zag Festival Parade down Haynes Street in the Evening. I particularly enjoyed the Kalamunda Youth Swing Band, who played as the Closing act of the Festival.”
Seniors at the Rotary Seniors Week Concert were entertained by the melodic voices of the Hills Harmony Choir performing up tempo songs like Hey Big Spender, Dedicated Follower of Fashion plus the duets and harmonies of Brooke Napier, the angelic sounds of Sabrina Guilbert and Candice, by performer Karina DiFabio.”
The Zig Zag Festival contained a similarly fantastic line up – in a volume never seen before. The Festival was celebrating 25 years and had an impressive line up of entertainment, as well as community activities, markets and more. Some of the entertainers who performed over the course of the nine hour festival included the Majitil Moorna Choir, Kalamunda Youth Swing band, Mucky Duck Bush Band, Mt Helena Guitar Ensemble, Akappella Munda, Raven, Blue Celts, Black Chook Chutney, Cobwebs, Convict X, Laced Affair, The day after and many, many more.
Combined with a range of free children’s craft and activities, as well as a top quality market with garden gifts, jewellery, soaps, candles, crystals, art exhibitions and sales, a range of food stalls and performances the festival is sure to go down as one of the many highlights of Zig Zag Community Arts dynamic history in the region.
Festival Coordinator Celia Cheffins said, “I believe the Zig Zag was an outstanding success. The weather seemed almost perfect, right through to the lovely, balmy evening concert with the wonderful performance of the Kalamunda Youth Swing Band. “
“The Festival had a wonderful beginning with the "Welcome to Country" and the amazing Madjitil Moorna choir. From then on the day seemed to flow really smoothly and everyone seemed relaxed and happy. There were great crowds throughout the day with thousands of people coming to enjoy everything on offer at Stirk Park. The kid's activities were fantastic as always and all the food was yummy. The arts and crafts stallholders were thrilled with their sales and people were genuinely interested in our 25 year retrospective exhibition that brought together images from all our previous Zig Zag Festivals. The first Youth Arts Exhibition held this year near the Youth Stage was small but impressive and an initiative we hope to build on in the future. “ he said.
“The Zig Zag Festival Committee members and scores of volunteers are the real heroes of the day, their untiring commitment and generous help contributed to making the 25th Zig Zag Festival the best ever!” Celia gushed.
Crowds flocked to Haynes St to see the Festival Parade at 6pm featuring entries from scores of community groups including, The Hills Pipe Band, Kalamunda Swimming Club, the Kalamunda Heritage History Village volunteers in costume and with vintage bicycles, Michael Alvarez - the Kite Man, Ozmosis playing traditional Catalan clarinets, Falls Road Primary School with AC/PVC musical Instruments, the Soroptimists (who organised the parade this year), the Red Hat Ladies, the ever popular Black Nonnas, and the fantastic ‘Cataplosion’ puppet created by the Lesmurdie Venturer Scouts.
