Shire of Kalamunda Leading the Way

The Shire of Kalamunda has been officially recognised for their proactive approach to environmental sustainability via their involvement in the Cities for Climate Protection Programme.  The Shire was recently elevated to the Cities for Climate Protection Plus, which aims to further progress the numerous achievements already made in mitigating the effects of climate change in the corporate sector and incorporate sustainability with a whole council approach.

CEO James Trail said, “We are extremely proud to be at the forefront of climate change mitigation within the local government sector. Since the Shire of Kalamunda joined the CCP Programme the organisation has been able to learn, adapt and reduce local greenhouse gas emissions. Staff have recognised the importance of their ability to contribute positively to the global greenhouse effort, and the community is beginning to recognise the value and benefits of reducing energy use.”

The Shire of Kalamunda has been a participant in the Cities for Climate Protection Programme since 2000. This national program involves 230 Local Government Authorities, or 84% of the countries population, who have all committed to act in a sustainable manner in a bid to reduce the level greenhouse emissions escaping into the earth’s atmosphere.

Shire of Kalamunda Environmental Coordinator Giles Glasson, “Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is challenging to achieve in a Shire with substantial population growth and areas of green fields development. It has been even more challenging in a period in which the Shire has undertaken a major refurbishment and extension of its administration facilities. The achievement of Milestone 5 shows the commitment of the Shire of Kalamunda to achieve a 20% reduction goal for corporate activities, aiming to stabilise community emissions by 2010.”
