Waste Water Disposal Applications
All buildings that produce wastewater are required to connect to either the main sewer or an approved effluent disposal system.
Where main sewer is available it is a requirement for new buildings to connect, please contact the Water Corporation on 13 13 95 for information regarding main sewer connections.
Where main sewer it is not available an onsite effluent disposal system needs to be installed. There are a variety of effluent disposal systems available which range from standard septic tanks and leach drains to aerobic treatment units, known as ATUs. An application form is required to be completed in order for the Shire’s Health Service to assess the suitability of the proposed system for long term waste water disposal. The application must include two copies of a site plan showing the location of the building, boundaries, contours, contour levels and preferred location of the proposed system.
Wastewater Disposal Application Form
Once an application form has been received, an Environmental Health Officer conducts an onsite inspection to assess the suitability of the proposed system on the lot and to ensure that all requirements are met.
After a system is installed a final inspection is conducted to ensure the system has been installed in accordance with the conditions of approval. A permit to use is then issued providing the system complies and a Major Plumbing Compliance Certificate has been received from the plumber. It is an offence to occupy a house before a permit to use has been issued.
Applications for Conventional Septic Systems
In order to ensure the application addresses all requirements and to prevent any unnecessary delays in the approval process, please see the below Guidelines on Submitting a Septic Application.

Alternative Wastewater Disposal Systems and ATUs
Alternative effluent disposal systems may also be installed and these may be the only suitable system for some properties. Below is a list of approved Alternative Wastewater Treatment System Suppliers.
Alternative Wastewater Treatment System Suppliers
ATUs are required by law to be serviced on a 3 monthly basis, the above list of suppliers includes a list of maintenance persons authorised to service ATUs. Please see the below Guidelines on Submitting an ATU Application.

Grey Water Disposal
Greywater includes water from the kitchen, laundry and bathroom that does not contain solid waste. These systems are installed to recycle household water onto the garden via an approved irrigation system. Below is a list of approved grey water disposal systems.
Approved Greywater Systems
Similar to a septic application, a Wastewater Disposal Application Form is required to be completed. Please see the below information on Greywater disposal and how to submit an application for the disposal of Greywater.
