Preparing Your Application
Your application is the first step towards securing an interview and therefore all aspects of the application should be of the highest standard possible. The application should be stapled in the top left hand corner. Please do not submit applications in folders or include original documents.
Your application should include the follow documents:
The application package should be completed. This helps the panel members to clearly and easily learn more about your background.
The cover letter is a brief letter outlining the position you are applying for and a brief description of your background and reasoning for applying for the position.
Curriculum Vitae (Resume)
Your Curriculum Vitae should be current and include your personal details (e.g. name, address, contact number) relevant work history, education, training courses attended, qualifications and professional memberships.
Relevant work history should commence with the most recent position you have held, as well as the dates/period of employment. In the description of your work history, give a brief summary of the duties and responsibilities for each of the positions.
You should include in your Curriculum Vitae the names and contact numbers of at least two (2) referees. These referees may be contacted to verify the information stated in your curriculum vitae. Preferably one referee should be your current supervisor or manager, alternatively a supervisor/manager from a previous position may be used.
Addressing the Selection Criteria
The Selection Criteria is the most important part of your application. The selection criteria specifies the minimum education, knowledge, skills and experience that is required for the position.
When addressing the selection criteria, a separate paragraph should be used for each heading and try to ensure that you use work related examples, where possible, to demonstrate your experiences, knowledge and skills.
It is also recommended that your statement of claim for each selection criteria should be no more than half a page in length.
Checking your application
You may find it a good idea to ensure you:
- Filled out the application package
- Included copies Curriculum Vitae and Covering letter
- Addressed the Selection Criteria
- Proof read full application
- Photocopied the whole application for your records (personal preference)
- Once you have prepared the above documents and addressed the selection criteria you can lodge your application.
When lodging your application, please ensure that the position title and number is clearly marked in the covering letter of your application.

The acceptance of late applications will be at the discretion of the Manager Strategy & People Services in consultation with the relevant Director and/or Chief Executive Officer.

Preparing for the interview
Short listing of applications for interview by the recruitment panel may take up to two (2) weeks after the closing date.

Re-read your application as it may be referred to during your interview and any information you have collected about the position.
Focus on the selection criteria listed or key job requirements identified, and think of work situations where you have demonstrated the relevant skills and abilities.
Focus on the role of the position and think about how you would undertake the role and why hiring you to undertake the duties would be good for the City.
Think about the questions you might have about the position, the City or the team you will be working in.
If you are selected for an interview an officer from the City of Kalamunda will telephone you to organise a time to conduct the interview. You will receive an email confirming the date, time and location of your interview including the HR Officers contact details.
The Recruitment Panel will consist of at least two (2) members. Interviews will follow a set format to ensure equity and fairness to each applicant and will be evaluated in the same manner.
During the interview, Recruitment Panel members may take turns in asking you questions. The panel will also be writing notes on your responses to the questions.
Although the interview will follow a formal format the City of Kalamunda staff are very friendly so relax and respond to the questions to the best of your ability.
